When purchasing a caravan, knowing your vehicle's maximum towing capacity is crucial. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual or the manufacturer's website for this information, as automatic or manual transmission and petrol or diesel versions often have different capacities.
You'll also need to know your vehicle's maximum towball download, as this will influence your caravan options. The maximum towing capacity is ultimately limited by the lowest-rated component in the towing configuration, whether the towbar, towball, or vehicle. Towballs and towbars should have a stamped rating that must not be exceeded. The owner's manual also provides the maximum permissible Gross Combined Mass (GCM), which includes the total weight of the car, caravan, and their contents.
For instance, if your vehicle can legally tow up to 2100kg but has a towbar rated at 1200kg, the weight limit is 1200kg. Check the towbar for a plate or label with the manufacturer's name and the maximum capacity. Additionally, ensure the GCM isn't surpassed by adding the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) to the caravan's Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM).
Also, consult your owner's manual for the rear axle load limits. Overloading the back axle, especially when towing a caravan and carrying heavy items in the vehicle, is dangerous and illegal.
Smaller caravans generally have a wider range of suitable towing vehicles. Larger family and luxury caravans require more consideration when selecting the right towing vehicle. Typically, four-cylinder vehicles with 2L engines can tow 1000kg to 1200kg, provided the vehicle and towbar ratings are adequate. Some six-cylinder and V8 sedans and wagons can tow lightweight single-axle caravans and campers up to 1700kg. Medium to large SUVs and 4WDs can tow up to 2500kg comfortably. For heavier caravans over three tonnes, options like Ford F250s and LandCruisers are recommended.
Before towing a luxury caravan, visit a weighbridge to check the caravan's laden weight, including full water tanks and packed gear, to ensure it doesn't exceed your vehicle's towing capacity.
